Mental Health Counselor - Residential

SailFuture’s Mental Health Counselor’s primary responsibility is to build meaningful and impactful relationships with the youth in SailFuture’s care. This position includes traditional mental health service delivery responsibilities, as well as non-traditional responsibilities as part of the large SailFuture continuum of care (see below).

This position will provide mental health and behavioral health services to up to 16 youth in SailFuture’s continuum of care. This position will work out of the SailFuture school, SailFuture’s Group Homes, and SailFuture’s sailing vessel.

This is a salaried position with a 45-hour work week and is not eligible for overtime pay.

Traditional Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate all therapeutic services for all youth in residential care and independent living program
  • Work in partnership with psychiatrist to monitor and coordinate medication management for all youth in residential care
  • Provide therapeutic house support up to twenty hours per week
  • Provide 1:1 therapeutic services to up to 16 youth per week (1-hour session)
    • 6 youth in Waterfront House
    • 6 youth in White House
    • Up to 4 youth in Independent Living Program
  • Develop treatment plans in partnership with Residential Change Agents, Program Director, Case Manager, and other stakeholders
  • Provide in-depth assessments to all youth who enter the SailFuture home
  • Provide assessments to all youth at-risk who present self-harming or homicidal behaviors
  • Create initial and master treatment plans and lead 30-day treatment team meetings and 6-month treatment plan reviews
  • Provide training and youth-specific feedback to staff across all teams
  • Coordinate and process medicaid billing for BHOS (Codes: H2020-HA, H0031-HO, H0032, H0032 - TS)

Non-Traditional Responsibilities:

  • Live in Group Home for the first 3 weeks of employment as part of training to learn the culture and systems of the SailFuture residential model
  • Participate in week-long domestic and international sailing expeditions up to 8 times per year (living on the boat and working alongside youth during these experiences)
  • Be a fully integrated team player across all areas of the SailFuture continuum (sailing, school, job training, residential, and mental health)


- Master’s Degree, or higher, from an Accredited College or University in related field 

- Active Florida Licensure as a Clinical Social Worker, Mental Health Counselor, or Registered Intern

- Team player committed to doing whatever it takes for youth in their care

- Experience working with at-risk youth, specifically teenagers

- Excellent communicator and problem solver

- Passion for adventure

- Sailing experience a plus, but not required

Compensation and Benefits

  1. $42,000 - 55,000 annual salary depending on experience
